EDUCATION

Abolition of the death penalty is never definitively acquired. 60% of the world population still lives in a country whose penal system includes the death penalty, and in abolitionist countries public opinion must be endlessly informed and made aware. With its project Teaching Abolition, created in 2009, ECPM has been able to develop various ways to raise awareness among young people. Lesson modules, school events and class projects are freely available to help them consider the right to life.

ACTIONS IN PROCESS

To take the topic a step further following a class event, every year ECPM sets up class projects inviting pupils to express their vision of a world without the death penalty through the creation of their own medium to raise awareness about abolition. These projects enable pupils to take an interest in abolition of the death penalty from a practical angle by helping them find out about new skills and calling on their creativity.

The 3rd Draw Me Abolition Competition 

As part of the 14th World Day Against the Death Penalty, to be held on 10 October 2016, pupils from middle and high schools (12 to 18 year olds) from across the world are invited to participate in the 3rd Draw Me Abolition competition, The aim is to produce an anti-death penalty poster. The top 50 chosen by an international jury will be exhibited in the participating countries and at the next regional and world congresses against the death penalty (in 2018 and 2019 respectively). An exhibition catalogue will also be published to highlight the pupils’ work.

How the competition will unfold 

Phase 1 : 10 October/10 December 2016
Introduction to the theme and graphic design 

During this phase, the classes which have signed up to the competition can receive a visit at school from one of the project’s partners who will raise their awareness of the theme of the death penalty. Further, the organisers of the competition will provide all the pupils involved with educational tools to help them learn how to produce a graphic poster independently.

Phase 2: February 2017
Designs sent to the jury 

During this period, teachers or organisations must send the original designs to ECPM by post to 69 rue Michelet, 93100 Montreuil, France. NB: for security reasons, all the originals must also be scanned and sent to the organisers by WeTransfer.

Phase 3: March 2017
Deliberation of the jury and selection of the best posters 

An international jury composed of people working in the field of human rights will be responsible for choosing the top 50 designs.

Phase 4: April 2017
Announcement of the results and publication of the exhibition and catalogue 

The results of the competition will be put online on the abolition.fr website and all coordinators will receive an email with a list of the winning pupils. At the same time, the exhibition and the exhibition catalogue will be published.

Phase 5
Exhibition of the winning posters 

The top 50 designs will be exhibited in each participating country (place and dates to be confirmed at a later date) as well as at the regional and world congresses against the death penalty (in 2018 and 2019 respectively). The three posters which have the most votes will also receive a special prize.
